Planning a Massachusetts getaway doesn't have to mean choosing between Boston's Freedom Trail and a Cape Cod beach vacation. The two are about two hours apart by car, so treating one as a day trip from the other rarely does either justice. The smarter play for 2026 is a split-stay: spend one or two nights in Boston for the history and city energy, then settle into a Cape Cod home for three to five nights of genuine vacation.
At Stay On The Cape Vacation Rentals, we're set up to help with both halves of that trip. Our parent company, South End Hospitality, manages hotels right in Boston, and our vacation homes span Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Bourne on the Cape. Here's how to put the two together.
The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walking route linking 16 historic sites, from Boston Common to the USS Constitution in Charlestown. It rewards unhurried time, and the easiest way to get that is to sleep in the city for the first night or two of your trip.
For those nights, stay with our own team. South End Hospitality manages two hotels in Boston: Charlesgate Suites and The Chester Hotel. Basing yourself at either one means you can:
With the city portion handled by hotels managed by our team, you get the Freedom Trail experience the way it's meant to be done: on foot, at your own pace, with a short stroll home at the end of the night.
After the city, trade sidewalks for sand. This is where the trip becomes a true vacation, with slow mornings, beach afternoons, and chowder-house evenings.
Our full collection of Cape Cod vacation rentals spans Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Bourne, with homes that include air conditioning, full kitchens, washers, and space for the whole group to spread out after a couple of nights of city walking.

Take this Heated Salt Water Pool home in Barnstable. It's the kind of place where the second half of your trip unwinds poolside, with the Freedom Trail already checked off and nothing on the schedule but beach time.
History lovers don't have to stop at the canal, either. The Cape has its own share of Americana, from the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum and Heritage Museums and Gardens to the shops and restaurants along Main Street Hyannis.
Seafood lovers will appreciate being minutes from local institutions. Our guide to the best seafood restaurants in Harwich and Yarmouth is a great place to start planning your dinners.

For groups who want walkable beach access and a dose of Kennedy country, this three-bedroom in Hyannisport puts you within walking distance of the shore. And if you're weighing towns, our comparison of Yarmouth versus Harwich for a family trip can help you narrow down the right neighborhood.
By car: plan on roughly two hours each way between downtown Boston and the mid-Cape, and more in summer bridge traffic. That's exactly why we recommend the split-stay over commuting: you make the drive once in each direction, timed to avoid the worst backups, instead of repeating it.
By train: in season, the CapeFLYER runs weekend service between Boston's South Station and the Cape, with stops including Bourne and Hyannis. Its weekend schedule isn't built for a there-and-back day trip, but it's a genuinely pleasant way to move between the two halves of a split stay: finish your Boston nights, board at South Station, and step off near your Cape rental without fighting bridge traffic. Check the current schedule before you plan around it.
If you're flying in, the order takes care of itself: land at Logan, enjoy Boston car-free from The Chester or Charlesgate Suites, then head down to the Cape for the beach portion of the week.
One trip, two very different kinds of memories: colonial history on the Freedom Trail, then long beach days with the family on Cape Cod. With Boston hotels managed by our parent company South End Hospitality and vacation homes across Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Bourne, our team can host you for the whole journey.
Browse the full lineup of homes with Stay On The Cape Vacation Rentals, from pool retreats in Barnstable to walk-to-beach getaways in Hyannisport, and book your Boston nights at The Chester Hotel or Charlesgate Suites. Your 2026 Massachusetts adventure has room for it all.
