Around Harwich

Harbors, sound-side beaches, and the bike trail

Harwich keeps four things close: a walkable port village, two working harbors, calm sound-side beaches, and the Cape Cod Rail Trail running right through the middle of town.

Harwich Port

Walk to ice cream, dinner, and the dock

Park the car once. The village strip along Main Street puts coffee, lobster rolls, and Sundae School ice cream all within a few blocks.

Dinner on Main

Brax Landing and The Port for fried clams and harbor views; no need to drive into Chatham.

Sundae School

The Harwich Port location has been scooping homemade ice cream for forty-plus summers.

Village shops

Small bookstore, beach gear, and a hardware store that has whatever you forgot to pack.

Wychmere & Saquatucket

Two working harbors, ten minutes apart

Wychmere is the postcard — a near-perfect circle of moored boats. Saquatucket is where the ferry to Nantucket leaves and where most of the charter captains tie up.

Sunset over Wychmere

Snow Inn Road gives you the classic overlook; bring a drink and arrive twenty minutes before sundown.

Freedom Ferry to Nantucket

Day-trip ferry leaves Saquatucket Harbor — easier parking than the Hyannis terminal.

Charter fishing

Striper and bluefish charters book out of Saquatucket; mornings fill first.

Sound-side beaches

Calmer water, gentler waves

Harwich faces Nantucket Sound, so the south-side beaches stay warmer and flatter than the ocean side — easier for little kids and longer afternoons.

Red River Beach

Long sandy stretch with a snack shack and restrooms; sticker required in season, parking lot is large.

Pleasant Road Beach

Smaller neighborhood beach, quieter at low tide, popular with families staying nearby.

Dogs welcome off-season

Most Harwich town beaches allow leashed dogs before May 15 and after September 15.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

Twenty-five paved miles through your front yard

The Rail Trail cuts straight across Harwich. Head east and you're in Orleans in under an hour; keep going and you hit Nickerson State Park's ponds.

Rentals in town

Harwich Port Bike Co. rents by the day or week and will drop bikes at the house.

Halfway stop in Orleans

Hot Chocolate Sparrow sits a short detour off the trail in Orleans — the usual coffee-and-pastry break heading east.

Ride to Nickerson

Twelve mostly flat miles east to freshwater swimming at Flax Pond — pack a towel.

Day Trips From The Driveway

Four Days, Four Easy Plans

Pick a direction from the driveway — the trail, the harbor, the lighthouse, or the calm side of the sound.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

Roll out of the driveway onto the paved Rail Trail — Harwich to Wellfleet, no car, dog on a leash beside the bike.

Sunset at Wychmere

Walk down to Wychmere Harbor around 7pm — fishing boats, a curved breakwater, and the best light of the day.

Chatham Lighthouse Beach

Twenty minutes east for the seal-watching beach below the lighthouse, then fried clams in town on the way home.

Red River Beach

Sound-side and shallow — warm water, gentle waves, parking that doesn't fill at 9am. Best beach with little kids.
